Itsy Bitsy Spider Cake Art!

For a sweet little guy in our family turning two this past weekend,  I was invited to create a 'smash cake' ~ (a celebratory cake intended to be destroyed, especially by a child.)

"The Itsy Bitsy Spider" being the theme for his birthday party made it all the more fun to try and create a cute spider and the other elements in the song - all edible and yummy!

The cake was was baked in a 6-inch pan, frosted, placed on a sweet little doily, then on a fantastically appropriate spider web plate I happily found in the Halloween section at Target.  

                                      

After some trial and error ~ (Oreo Cakester's too crumbly, Ding Dong's too big), the spider body was created by painting a marshmallow with AmeriColor black food coloring. Spider legs were Australia's Darrell Lea liquorice, sliced into thin strips, then bored into tiny holes in the marshmallow. Spider eyes were yellow M&Ms with black dots painted on with the food coloring, glued on with dabs of frosting.  

 Then, on to color frosting to 'paint' the sunshine, spout, raindrops, and some green grass to complete the scene.
